Mail Bomb!

Okay, here's my idea. Since I can't be there with my Mama, I want to flood her with cards. I want her to know that I have amazing people in my life who care about her as well. Would you be down for sending her a card? You don't have to write a novel, or even anything at all if you don't want. She also loves crossword puzzles and word finds, if you want to throw something in. Draw her something silly! Tell her about your day. Anything you want that'll cheer her up.

I can't start this until they've decided she's stable enough to move from the hospital to a hospice. But if you know me and want to start now, you can send them to me and I'll send them on to her. Just ask for my address, if you don't have it already.

Does this make sense? My brain is...foggy. I just...I just want her to feel loved and thought about and cared for.

I'm asking you something, though. Those of you who hate me: please don't send my mother negative shit. Please. If you absolutely have to tell someone how ugly and fat and worthless I am, tell me. If you have to talk about what a terrible daughter I am, tell me. If you want to tell someone how this is my fault, tell me. If you want to spew hatred, do it to me, not to her. Please, leave her out of it.

  1. It might be best to just filter all of the mail for her and ask people to send an extra stamp or something to help.

  3. Gah, I can't believe anyone would be horrible enough to send hate mail to a dying woman, but then, I can't believe a lot of the shit I've seen thrown your way. :(

  4. I think this is a wonderful idea. My grandmother, who I have been extremely close to all of my life was just diagnosed with ALS. It's such a difficult thing to wrap your mind around and there never feels as though there is going to be enough time. It must be so hard to be away from her. I would love to send her a card to make her smile. You can send your address to me at prettypennymae@yahoo.com or you can find me at my blog, prettypennymae.blogspot.com

  6. I would really really really suggest that you put up an e-mail and just make a mass response with an safe address and ask for an extra stamp

Normally I wouldn't say something like that? but I've -seen- the people who are mean to you and those people worry me.

Your mother does -not- deserve to have them in her life..what little of it there is left.

I'd send her something, but will have to wait a week or so for when I'm back in town!

  7. I want to send your mom something sweet and loving. Just send me your address (or rather the address) on a private message on twitter, since we are friends there. I want to send your mom something sweet and loving.

  8. Where are you and where is your mama? I only just 'met' you through friends of friends. Hi, I'm Amani in Oakland.

Do you know the airlines offer special fares for cases like yours? It might be less than you think.

  9. Hi. I've never commented on your blog before, but I just wanted to know if I could be trusted to have your address so that my sister and I could send silly postcards and letters her way? My email address is tootsicle at gmail. I hope you get the money together for your mama fund.. I think it's completely sweet and reasonable to ask for something like that, no matter what.

  10. You don't know me but I've read your blog for years. I would love to send your mum something - would she like something Australian? (I am Australian). I bet I could find crosswords too that she'd like. I love sending snail mail packages! What would be the best way to get your address? Just so you know I'm not a nutter, my name is Alice Coltheart and my email is a_coltheart {at} yahoo.com.au :) You can google me, I'm the only one in the world I'm almost certain!

ps: i would definitely contribute to your trip except i'm unemployed atm :/

  11. Hi I've been a long time reader, rare commenter but I love writing letters and I'd love to write your mom. I just actually contributed via paypal like 10 mins ago so you have my email address (although it's my old one) but you can send me an address there. Or I can find you on facebook (we have friends in common - I've seen you on their wall) and write you there if you'd prefer so you can check me out.

  12. Let me know her address at caglac@rpi.edu so I can send a card. Is there some sort of hospice embargo on candy and treats, or would I be able to ship a variety she enjoys from online (Sees or wherever) in a few weeks once she is moved from the hospital?

So sad to read about your mom's prognosis but relieved that you will be able to go back and see her. I would love to send your mom a nice card or something from NYC. Send me the address and I will get in the mail ASAP. xoxo to you!!

My 3 year old wants to draw her a picture too and maybe we can send her some candy or crossword puzzles. Are you still doing this? Let us know if you have a PO Box!!

  15. Hi Heidi! I'm not sure how things are going now, but I'm catching up on your blog and wanted to tell you about www.wishuponahero.com. Long story short if you're not familiar it's a social helping network site where you can create an account and post any wish your heart desires. Wishes can be as simple as 'please send my mama a card' or as big as 'please help me build a house' and everything in between. It's a great, safe, positive place to get help w/stuff like this!
