That's a Dealbreaker, Ladies!

Mama got taken to the ER for her incision. Which split open even more. She should be fine. God only knows how long she’ll be hospitalized though. I just focus on how much better she is now than she was six months ago. When she went into the hospital in November I was absolutely positive she going to die. She couldn’t move, couldn’t eat, couldn’t form sentences, couldn’t function. But she’s so much better now. She looks and feels so much better. And that’s what I try to think about.

Slight problem. Of course. I might not be able to bring my cats to my teacher’s house. And that’s a dealbreaker. I begged for them to let me keep them in the room I’ll be sleeping in. So we’ll see how they respond. It would destroy me to have to take them to the pound. I just couldn’t do it. Even if it meant losing this opportunity. I have no idea what I’ll do if this doesn’t work out. Find a cat-friendly couch somewhere, I suppose. It’s always something, I swear to god.

Random Bits
• My last name gets mistaken for Japanese on a regular basis. It’s actually German.

• Sometimes my biological clock is the size of Big Ben. And other times I just want a dog.

• I want to travel. I want to travel so badly that I ache inside.

• The only thing I hate as much as I hate onions (possibly more than I hate onions) is cilantro.

• I hated the Harry Potter books. But quite enjoy the movies. Especially that Malfoy kid. Rawr!!

Jelac07 I so need to email you but I can't get on LJ right now! Would you mind emailing me so we can chat about stuff? thesugarmonster AT gmail DOT com. Thank you, honey!!!

  1. Maybe a PDX pal can take your kitties on for you until it's time to jump your teacher's ship! You can do it!

  2. I can understand why you don't want to lose your cats....they are some of the few things that you have in your life on a daily basis...I hope you can figure it out. Any friends who would take the cats in? Good luck to your mom...hope this surgery helps her

  3. That would be a deal breaker for me, too. I completely understand: we are moving right now and I keep shooting down really great, cheap places because they won't take the cats. My husband is furious and I told him to suck it up; if there is room for his two older kids, there's room for my two cats!

  4. Heidi -- please don't let your heart get ahead of your brain. This deal with your teacher sounds so good...is there a friend or someone who could take them on a temporary basis? Instead of the pound is there a no-kill shelter nearby? I'm so sorry this is all happening to you - it just sucks....thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way.

  6. Can you find someone to keep your cats for you while you're living with your teacher? From what I've read, it doesn't seem like you have much of a choice but to figure out a way to stay with your teacher. If you can't pay your rent... you have to make sacrifices.

  8. Dude I know how you feel about your kitties. I had a similar situation where I needed to find an apartment I could afford and have my dog, Chico or move back to Wisconsin to live with my parents for a while. I couldn't find an apartment that allowed pets that I could afford on my own at the time so I hightailed it back to Wisco and suffered through living with my parents for a few months. Also I feel the same way about traveling, but many times feel poor and tied down in so many ways.

Maybe you could find a friend to take care of your cats for a couple months till you get on your feet?

  9. Heidi, I've been a long time reader, and before I deleted myspace we were friends on there. I never comment because my opinion does not matter whatsoever. This is your life, and you get to choose how to live it, as I live mine. I have no ill-will against you, and I support you in fact. I just want you to re-consider the no cat situation. You are always writing about how you want to improve yourself by thinking more about your well-being instead of others, and this is that exact moment where you can do it. I love, love, love animals too, but if it came down to me versus them, it would always be 100% me. You need this, you don't have anywhere else to go and if they don't want your animals then maybe it's time to adopt them out, or give them to someone who will take care of them. Do not let that be a dealbreaker girl, you are much better than being homeless because of your cats. I wish you luck with this! Amanda

  11. I'm going to echo the above regarding trying to rehome the cats if they cannot come with you. I think there are many non-pound options. Rehoming a mature, well-behaved cat would not be impossible, especially with the extensive network of people you have who I'm sure would be willing to help you accomplish this. Also, with rehoming the cats, you'd be cutting another recurring expense, which doesn't sound like it would be a bad thing. I absolutely understand that you love and are loyal to your pets, but sometimes giving something up in a responsible way is ok.

  12. As a cat-owner I completely understand this. And you also have to take into consideration that giving up the cats could be bad for your mental health, especially if your relationship with them is very important to you. Pets can provide comfort, companionship, a reason to get up in the morning -- and losing them suddenly could cause you a great deal of distress. So giving up the cats isn't necessarily "putting yourself first." Only you can know what will ultimately be best for you.

I hope that your teacher decides to let you bring the cats, or that you can find a local friend to take them temporarily.
